Bomke lends support to domestic violence measures

[MAY 21, 2003]  SPRINGFIELD -- Sen. Larry Bomke lent his support in recent efforts to protect victims of domestic violence. Two measures sponsored by Bomke gained approval in the Senate last week and moved on to the governor.

The first, House Bill 2525, would allow prior domestic violence convictions in other states to count against offenders in sentencing.

"This is a great step forward for victims of domestic violence," said Bomke, R-Springfield. "By allowing prior offenses from other states to count against an offender, we can better protect victims and their children from repeat attacks. Many times, victims will try to make a new life in another state only to have the attacker follow them and repeat their crimes in a new location. House Bill 2525 will make sure all of an abuser's prior offenses count against them in sentencing, regardless of the location where they occurred."

Under current law, prior convictions trigger increased penalties for domestic violence crimes if they are similar offenses against the same person or a family member and if the incidents occurred in Illinois. House Bill 2525 would allow prior offenses committed in other jurisdictions to also trigger the increased penalties.

Under current law, domestic battery is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a sentence of under one year in state prison or up to two years of probation. If the offender has prior convictions, the crime is a Class 4 felony, meriting one to three years in prison or 2½ years of probation.

Bomke's second measure, House Bill 2547, builds on a 1998 law (PA 90-245) that ended insurance discrimination against domestic violence victims when purchasing or renewing life, health or disability insurance.

Bomke sponsored the earlier law and this year is a sponsor of House Bill 3547, which extends the restrictions on denying coverage to victims of abuse to property and casualty insurance.

Both proposed laws gained unanimous approval in the Senate May 13. If signed into law, they will take effect Jan. 1, 2004.

Storage sheds burglarized

[APRIL 25, 2003]  Sometime prior to March 26, several burglaries took place at The Storage Box, 1730 Fifth St. in Lincoln. Unknown person(s) cut the locks off several storage sheds at that location. Once inside the sheds, unknown person(s) took video equipment, golf equipment and some computer equipment. Items stolen from the storage sheds added up to approximately $10,000.
