Brady meets with Forsyth leaders
I met with local business, volunteer
and community leaders in Forsyth at a 7:30 a.m. meeting Oct. 31 at
the Village Hall. We talked about community issues, legislation we
worked on this spring in Springfield and the issues we will be
considering this month during the fall legislative session.
Among the topics we discussed: the new
state inheritance tax imposed by the governor; the fact that
trucking companies are leaving Illinois because of new taxes and
fees imposed by the Democratic-controlled legislature; the proposed
purchase of Illinois Power by Commonwealth Edison; bicyclists'
rights and responsibilities on streets, highways, bicycle lanes,
bicycle routes, bicycle trails or bicycle paths; and issues
surrounding the effect of big retailers on businesses in small
communities.
I have been visiting communities in
central Illinois to talk about their concerns and to tell them more
about the issues we worked on during the spring legislative session
in Springfield.
Illinois Republicans seek later ballot
certification in 2004
A later-than-usual Republican National
Convention in 2004 is posing a challenge to Illinois Republicans.
The 2004 Republican National Convention
in New York City is scheduled for early September, which is later
than usual. Both national political parties usually have their
conventions in August.

In Illinois, the State Board of
Election certifies the ballot not less than 67 days before the date
of the general election, which is usually near the end of August or
early in September. To ensure that the Illinois ballot for the 2004
general election lists Republican candidates, we are asking that the
State Board of Elections be allowed, for 2004 only, to
certify the results of any national nominating convention prior to
Election Day, which is on Nov. 2 in 2004.
Illinois voters deserve the opportunity
to choose from all duly nominated candidates in next year's general
election.

My legislative interns for the fall

Plains, were with me on the Senate floor Nov. 4 as the fall
legislative session got under way in Springfield.
Adam is a
junior at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. Josh is a
senior at Illinois State University in Bloomington.
