'Sam' McShane
Robert W. “Sam” McShane, 83, of Lincoln
died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2003) at 10:05 p.m. at Memorial Medical
Center in Springfield.
A rosary service and visitation were on
Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
His funeral was Friday
morning at Holy Family Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Thomas Taylor
officiating.
Burial, with military rites, is in
St. Mary's Cemetery, Lincoln.
Mr. McShane retired in 1983 as a CILCO
supervisor. He had been with the company for over 30 years.
He was a U.S. Navy submarine veteran of
World War II and was awarded the Silver Star.
He was born July 9, 1920, in Lincoln
to Hugh and Lela Wendell McShane. He married Phyllis J. Noonan on
May 30, 1949, in Lincoln. She died Aug. 17, 2002.
Survivors are five sons, Mark (and
Karen) McShane of Kalamazoo, Mich., Pat (and Annette) McShane of
Batesville, Ark., Jim (and Gail) McShane of Lincoln, John (and
Diane) McShane of South Bend, Ind., and Matt (and Susan) McShane of
Batesville, Ark.; two daughters, Marta (and Roger) McCall of
Memphis, Tenn., and Ann (and Jim) Olson of Broadwell; 20
grandchildren; one brother, Edward McShane of Ojia, Calif.; and two
sisters, Agnes Wilmert of Lincoln and Loretta Wands of Springfield.
He was also preceded in death by four
brothers and six sisters.
He was a member of Holy Family Church
in Lincoln, a 54-year member of the Knights of Columbus and a member
of American Legion Post 263.

R. Clayton "Doc"
Ainsworth, 88, of Mason City died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2003) at 4:24
a.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.
Visitation will be
from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City.
His funeral will be
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mason City United Presbyterian Church,
with the Rev. Randall Paine officiating.
Burial will be in
Mason City Cemetery.
Mr. Ainsworth was a
hybrid corn breeder. He worked for Iowa State University and Funk
Brothers Seed Company before founding Ainsworth Seed Company in
1941. He was the third generation of Ainsworths in seed corn
production.
He was born Feb. 18,
1915, in Springfield to Ralph and Florence Barber Ainsworth. He
married Ruth Rigdon on July 12, 1941, in Petersburg. She died in
1994.
Survivors are one
son, Thomas (and Peggy) Ainsworth of Mason City, and three
grandchildren.
He was also preceded
in death by one brother, one sister and two sons, Joseph and James
Ainsworth.
He graduated from the
University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in 1937 and received
his master's degree from the U of I in 1940.
He was a founder and
past president of Soybean Research Foundation, one of the first
private soybean breeding organizations. He was a former director and
past president of Illinois Foundation Seeds Inc. and Illinois Crop
Improvement Association.
He was a former
director of Mason City National Bank and chairman of Mason City
Drainage District.
He was a member of
the Mason City United Presbyterian Church, where he served as
trustee and elder.
He was also a member
of the Mason City Rotary Club and Lincoln Elks Lodge 914.
Memorial contributions may be made to the
United Presbyterian Church in Mason City or the Wayne J. Schall
Hospice Fund.
