[SEPT. 22, 2003]  Eagle Food Centers received approval from U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois to sell a number of their stores. The Lincoln store at 1475 Woodlawn Road will be sold to the Kroger Company. The closing transaction is scheduled next Monday, Sept. 29.

The Kroger Company said that the recent acquisition will allow Kroger to expand its market base to serve additional customers in Lincoln.

"This acquisition solidifies our commitment to the Lincoln area," said Lisa Holsclaw, president of the Kroger Central Marketing Area. "We stand ready to serve its citizens for many years to come."

Once the agreements have been signed, the store at 1475 Woodlawn Road will close on Sept. 26 for remodeling. The remodeling will add a pharmacy and other departments, like Nature’s Market.

Once the store has been remodeled, "We will be combining our facilities at the Woodlawn Road site," a Kroger representative said. During the remodel, customers are encouraged to shop the Kroger store, located at 530 Woodlawn Road.

Kroger is currently assessing its employment needs in light of the acquisition. Priority consideration will be given to Kroger associates looking for expanded opportunities and former Eagle employees seeking employment. Anyone interested in employment can go to the 530 Woodlawn Kroger store and complete an application.

Kroger Central Marketing Area has 148 food and drug stores and 30 fuel centers, including Kroger, Owen's, Hilander and Pay Less, with locations mainly in Indiana and Illinois and with six stores in Missouri, two in Michigan and one in Ohio.
