[OCT. 23, 2003]  The Logan County Habitat for Humanity is looking for eligible families to own renovated or newly built homes. An orientation meeting for future home applicants will be Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1140 N. State St. in Lincoln. People interested can come learn more about the opportunities and the requirements to receive one of these homes.

In August the Logan County Board donated a property found by Remax Realtor Greg Brinner, who is a HUD representative. The donated property is the next place Habitat will tackle and renovate from house to home. It is located at 1409 N. Kankakee St.

Habitat is taking applications for this and other future homes at this time. Past applicants are encouraged to reapply. If they have applied in the past, they need to update their application. Only new applicants and applicants reapplying will be considered for future homes.

Once applications are received, Habitat will schedule an orientation to meet and evaluate applicants.

The philosophy behind Habitat for Humanity is to help families that might not be able to acquire the financing by any other means own their own home. Applicants must be willing to put in “sweat equity” to be eligible. The house is made affordable by all-volunteer work. The group's purpose is to “not to provide a handout but a hand up.”
