Ola Thompson
Ola Evelyn Isbell Thompson, 99, of
Lincoln has died. She was a resident of the Christian Village
Nursing Home since 1984.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday
at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Tim Searby
officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Burial will be in Zion Cemetery,
Lincoln.
Mrs. Thompson had been a cafeteria
manager. She was selected to open and manage the first snack bar at
the Lincoln Memorial Hospital, where she also managed the volunteer
staff. When Lincoln High School opened in 1958, she organized, hired
and managed the staff that served over 1,600,000 meals, not
including banquets, until she retired in 1969. During the summer she
managed the Lincoln Recreation Center's snack bar. Previously she
had worked in the cafeteria at Lincoln Bible College.
She was born on July 26, 1904, in
Sullivan, Ind., to Irene Mae Smith and Oag Isbell. Her family moved
to Lincoln, where she met her husband, Harry Thompson. They were
married in Lincoln on Nov. 1, 1924. He died July 17, 1973.
Survivors are two daughters, Ruby Paice
(and husband Les) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Viola McNally (and husband
Tom) of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Kenneth Thompson (married to
Nancy Tesh) of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Darlene
Claybourne of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and
three great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two
sons, Robert Wayne Thompson, who was born Jan. 12, 1925, and died
March 23, 1981, and Paul Edward Thompson, who was born Oct. 16,
1929, and died Nov. 20, 1973; a daughter-in-law, Robert's wife,
Doris G. (Goode), who died in November of 1999; and a son, Carrie
Wayne Thompson, who died in February of 1972.
Mrs. Thompson was active in several
community organizations and was a member of the YADNUS class at
Lincoln Christian Church. She served as president of the Monroe
Grade School PTA and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She was an avid doll collector, loved
crocheting and camping, and bowled for the Logan Lassies in the
'80s.

Alena
Newell
Alena Maxine Newell, 91, of Mason City,
died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at 12:05 p.m. at Mason City Area
Nursing Home.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday
at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with the Rev. Curt McCallister
officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.
Mrs. Newell was a homemaker and a
minister's wife.
She was born July 9, 1912, at Littleton
to Clyde and Pearl Wells Runkle. She married the Rev. Lyle Newell on
July 5, 1931. He died Oct. 28, 1988.
Survivors are two sons, Roger (and
Vicky) Newell of Quincy and Rob (and Vicki) Newell of Naples, Fla.;
one daughter, Rose (and Larry) Deener of Mason City; seven
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene (and Ruth)
Runkle of Littleton; and one sister, Doris Hillyer of Macomb.
She was also preceded in death by one
brother and two great-grandchildren.
She was a member of First Baptist
Church of Mason City.

Jane
Stahlhut
Jane H. Stahlhut, 83,
of Lincoln died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at Memorial Medical Center
in Springfield.
Visitation will be
from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in
Lincoln.
Her funeral will be
at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Stahlhut was a
homemaker, and after raising her own daughters, she was a foster
parent to more than 200 foster children over 19 years. Additionally,
she and her husband were master foster parents for many years and
taught foster parent classes throughout central Illinois for DCFS.
She was born Feb. 25,
1920, in Chicago, to Paul and Augusta Going Sherman. She married
Emil O. Stahlhut on Feb. 14, 1941, in Oak Park, and they were
married for over 62 years. He survives.
Other survivors are
four daughters, Carolyn (and Jerry) Frank of Springfield, Barbara
(and Mel) Thake of Bloomington, Peggy (and Mike) Webster of Urbana
and Mary (and Bob) Shattuck of Lincoln; a foster daughter, Debbie
Goacher of Centerville, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Mary Beth Thake,
Bill Thake, Nathan Frank, Craig Shattuck, Emily Shattuck and Maggie
Shattuck.
She was preceded in
death by an infant granddaughter, Margorie Thake.
She was a member of
St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln. She also was a member
of the League of Women Voters and an active volunteer for Girl
Scouts for many years.
She took great pride
in her children and grandchildren and always encouraged them. She
was a parent to the stranger and to all who passed through her door.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made
to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital or St. John United Church of
