MaryEllen Schreiber

MaryEllen Schreiber, 76, of Lincoln died Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at 1:03 p.m. at her home.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Brian Leesman officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chandlerville Cemetery, Chandlerville.

Mrs. Schreiber was the first secretary for Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln.

She was born Feb. 20, 1927, at Decatur to Homer and Rose Myrtle Aumiller Eaton. She married James E. Schreiber on Aug. 28, 1954, in Decatur. He preceded her in death.

Survivors are two sons, John E. (and Kelly) Schreiber of Lincoln and David (and Nykol) Schreiber of Lincoln, and four grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Chandlerville and the Missionary Society of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln.

Mildred Baker

Mildred N. Baker, 93, of Mason City died Sunday (Sept. 21, 2003) at 12:18 a.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery, Sweetwater.

Mrs. Baker was a teacher.

She was born July 8, 1910, at Middletown to Charles and Lillian May Mowry Newtson. She married Glenn S. Baker on Aug. 31, 1936. He died Dec. 24, 2001.

Survivors are one granddaughter, Aisha Post of Bristow, Va.; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Samuel Baker; one daughter, Sandra Miller; one brother, Raymond Newtson; a half brother, Henry Newtson; and two half sisters, Leota Graff and Gladys Steinhour.

She was a member of Irish Grove Presbyterian Church, Sweetwater.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kemmener Village in Assumption.


Ola Thompson

Ola Evelyn Isbell Thompson, 99, of Lincoln has died. She was a resident of the Christian Village Nursing Home since 1984.

Her funeral was Tuesday morning at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Tim Searby officiating. Visitation preceded the service.

Burial is in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Thompson had been a cafeteria manager. She was selected to open and manage the first snack bar at the Lincoln Memorial Hospital, where she also managed the volunteer staff. When Lincoln High School opened in 1958, she organized, hired and managed the staff that served over 1,600,000 meals, not including banquets, until she retired in 1969. During the summer she managed the Lincoln Recreation Center's snack bar. Previously she had worked in the cafeteria at Lincoln Bible College.

She was born on July 26, 1904, in Sullivan, Ind., to Irene Mae Smith and Oag Isbell. Her family moved to Lincoln, where she met her husband, Harry Thompson. They were married in Lincoln on Nov. 1, 1924. He died July 17, 1973.

Survivors are two daughters, Ruby Paice (and husband Les) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Viola McNally (and husband Tom) of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Kenneth Thompson (married to Nancy Tesh) of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Claybourne of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert Wayne Thompson, who was born Jan. 12, 1925, and died March 23, 1981, and Paul Edward Thompson, who was born Oct. 16, 1929, and died Nov. 20, 1973; a daughter-in-law, Robert's wife, Doris G. (Goode), who died in November of 1999; and a son, Carrie Wayne Thompson, who died in February of 1972.

Mrs. Thompson was active in several community organizations and was a member of the YADNUS class at Lincoln Christian Church. She served as president of the Monroe Grade School PTA and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She was an avid doll collector, loved crocheting and camping, and bowled for the Logan Lassies in the '80s.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Village Nursing Home of Lincoln.

 

Allice Booth

Allice L. Booth, 80, of Mason City died Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at 9:44 a.m. at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hurley Funeral Home, with Nash Shawgo officiating.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Booth worked at the Boss Glove Factory in Mason City and at Stetson China Factory in Lincoln.

She was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Mason City to Virtus and Gertrude Spencer Parr. She married Johnnie Booth in 1946 in Havana. He died in 1992.

Survivors are one brother, Dr. Daniel Parr of Pekin, and two sisters, Winifred Fredericks of East Peoria and Lucille DuPage of Pekin.

She was a member of the Mason City Assembly of God.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pekin Hospital or Mason City Assembly of God.


Jane Stahlhut

Jane H. Stahlhut, 83, of Lincoln died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Stahlhut was a homemaker, and after raising her own daughters, she was a foster parent to more than 200 foster children over 19 years. Additionally, she and her husband were master foster parents for many years and taught foster parent classes throughout central Illinois for DCFS.

She was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Chicago, to Paul and Augusta Going Sherman. She married Emil O. Stahlhut on Feb. 14, 1941, in Oak Park, and they were married for over 62 years. He survives.

Other survivors are four daughters, Carolyn (and Jerry) Frank of Springfield, Barbara (and Mel) Thake of Bloomington, Peggy (and Mike) Webster of Urbana and Mary (and Bob) Shattuck of Lincoln; a foster daughter, Debbie Goacher of Centerville, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Mary Beth Thake, Bill Thake, Nathan Frank, Craig Shattuck, Emily Shattuck and Maggie Shattuck.

She was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Margorie Thake.

She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln. She also was a member of the League of Women Voters and was an active volunteer for Girl Scouts for many years.

She took great pride in her children and grandchildren and always encouraged them. She was a parent to the stranger and to all who passed through her door.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital or St. John United Church of Christ.


Alena Newell

Alena Maxine Newell, 91, of Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at 12:05 p.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral was Tuesday morning at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with the Rev. Curt McCallister officiating. Visitation preceded the service.

Burial is in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Newell was a homemaker and a minister's wife.

She was born July 9, 1912, at Littleton to Clyde and Pearl Wells Runkle. She married the Rev. Lyle Newell on July 5, 1931. He died Oct. 28, 1988.

Survivors are two sons, Roger (and Vicky) Newell of Quincy and Rob (and Vicki) Newell of Naples, Fla.; one daughter, Rose (and Larry) Deener of Mason City; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene (and Ruth) Runkle of Littleton; and one sister, Doris Hillyer of Macomb.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and two great-grandchildren.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mason City.

Memorials may be made to her church or to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Phillip Arnold

Phillip R. Arnold, 53, of Kingwood, Texas, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at 10 a.m. at his home.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Harold Woodworth officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mr. Arnold was a salesman for Sears.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was born Oct. 7, 1949, in Lincoln to Kenneth and Waunetta Stumeier Arnold.

Survivors are his mother, of Mason City; two nieces; two nephews; and one brother, Steven (and Patty) Arnold of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Mason City.

Memorials may be made to the church.
