To the editor:
Food for thought:
All the recent articles and editorial discussions in The Courier
about gas and other issues cause me to make a couple of
observations.
Courier editorial article Nov. 19:
The article was headlined "Buy gas when you're out of town" and
ended the article with: "Buy your gas elsewhere. Hurt the dealers in
their wallets until they wake up and make us truly competitive
again." Hmmmm... On the day in question, local retailers were
selling gasoline below cost, but The Courier, as usual, failed to do
any research before expressing their uninformed opinion. By the way,
ask any student: Research involves more than just "calling around."
In my humble opinion it was an incredibly shameful display of
using the editorial pulpit for the purposes of pandering.
Maybe we should look at the newspaper business:
The Courier costs 50 cents, has typically far less than 20 pages per
issue, so let's just say it costs 2.5 cents per page. The Peoria
Journal Star (and we could do the same math for the Bloomington,
Springfield and Decatur newspapers) costs 75 cents, has typically
over 100 pages, so let's say it costs less than 1 cent per page.

column in this letter]

The obvious result:
The Courier costs over 333 percent more than the Journal Star.
That's outrageous! By The Courier's logic, maybe we should "Hurt The
Courier in their wallets until they wake up and make us truly
competitive again."
Apparently The Courier wouldn't understand competition if it
smacked them in the face. Don't you think we can expect newspapers
to at least be accurate?
If they can't get something this simple right, how can we trust
their editorial judgment to be informed on bigger issues like
Wal-Mart? But that is for another "Letter to the Editor."
