The Redbirds ranked No. 16 in the 1998 final poll after their first
playoff appearance, before being ranked No. 3 in 1999 after
advancing to the semifinals of the I-AA playoffs. ISU was one of
four schools from the Gateway Football Conference in the top 25,
joining national runner-up and No. 2-ranked Northern Iowa, No. 7
Southern Illinois, and No. 14 Youngstown State. The Gateway and the
Atlantic 10 led all conferences with four teams in the final poll.
In all, the Redbirds owned a 3-1 mark against the final top 25
teams, including wins over Northern Iowa, 38-3; Southern Illinois,
61-35; and No. 16 Eastern Illinois, 27-6. The lone loss came against
Youngstown State, 20-17.
