Official city of Lincoln Christmas ornament unveiled     Send a link to a friend

[NOV. 9, 2004]  Main Street Lincoln and the city of Lincoln have unveiled the design of this year's official Christmas ornament. The 2004 ornament features University Hall at Lincoln College.

Sixth in the series, the ornament in 24-karat gold over brass is enclosed in a white velvet presentation case with the city seal embossed in gold on the cover. The limited edition ornaments will include a numbered certificate of authenticity, the story of University Hall as told by Lincoln historian Paul Gleason and a miniature version of the proclamation signed by Mayor Beth Davis naming it the official city ornament.

Lincoln College broke ground for University Hall on Feb. 12, 1865. That date was on the anniversary of President Lincoln's birth and would become his last living birthday. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 14, 1865, and the doors opened to students in November 1866.

As a special recognition, the Main Street board of directors has chosen to again include a 2004 ornament as a thank-you gift for every business partnership of $125 or personal partnership of $50 received during the 2004 fund-raising campaign.

"With all of the support we receive from the community, this is just another great way for Main Street to say thank you. We could not achieve the goals that we do without your support," said Cynthia McGill, executive director.

The cost of each ornament is $15. Ornaments may be purchased at the Main Street Lincoln office, 229 S. Kickapoo, or by contacting the office at (217) 732-2929 or manager@mainstreetlincoln.com.

Ornaments will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
