Applications for scholarships now available

Students from the 44th District who will be attending state universities in Illinois may submit applications for the General Assembly Scholarship program to my office through March 19.

Eight one-year tuition waivers -- for fall 2005 and spring 2006 (excluding summer 2006) -- are available to students who will be attending state universities, with one specifically designated for a nursing student attending Illinois State University.

The remaining eight summer 2006 portions of the scholarship are available for teachers who are continuing their education at a state-funded school.

Students are encouraged to write to my office to request an application. The address is 2203 Eastland Drive, Suite 3, Bloomington, IL 61704.

Brady protests supplemental spending

Last week lawmakers approved $40.8 million in additional spending, intended to fill a shortfall in the fiscal 2005 budget approved in July 2004. I questioned the move because we are clearly not living within its means. We are spending money we do not have.

We can authorize all the extra spending we want, but the question remains: Where are the revenues that are going to pay the bills?

Instead of authorizing extra spending, we should be making cuts. That is what I do with my business, and that's what people do in their homes.
