Elkhart landmark could disappear       Send a link to a friend

[JAN. 29, 2005]  The Logan County Highway Department has plans for some major roadwork on Elkhart Hill. One location has an old historic bridge that is deteriorating and falling down, county highway chairman Terry Werth said. The road cannot be widened enough to take care of traffic there. It's almost a one-lane bridge, he said.

Highway engineer Tom Hickman determined that the bridge needs replacing at this point in time.

Unfortunately the county does not have the funds to replace it.

The county highway department planned to send a letter to the village of Elkhart explaining the circumstances.

Someone needs to lay claim to the bridge, Werth said: "It's either got to go, or someone has to take it over and take care of it."
