New law prohibits state business with Sudan A new law will
prevent the state of Illinois from doing business with the
government of Sudan because of its poor record on human rights.
Senate Bill 23 prohibits the state treasurer from depositing
funds into financial institutions that have loaned money to the
government of Sudan or any other entity connected to the government
of Sudan. The new law also places restrictions on pension fund
investments to prevent the state from investing in companies with
ties to the government of Sudan.
President Bush has publicly described the situation in Sudan as
genocide. Human rights groups have accused the government of Sudan
of arming Arab militiamen, the "Janjaweed," to blow up villages and
take on rebels. In Darfur, millions of people have been displaced
from their homes and tens of thousands have died.
As a government body, the state of Illinois should not use public
funds in such a way that they could financially benefit the Sudanese
government.
Keep addresses current for license plate notices
Recently, there have been complaints that people have not been
receiving notices from the secretary of state about renewing their
license plates.

The secretary of state's office gets addresses from the U.S. Post
Office for mailings, so individuals need to contact their local post
office or go online at www.usps.com
to check their address identification. If their addresses do not
match what is on the secretary of state's directory, they may not
receive their renewal notices.
The secretary of state's office sends notifications as a courtesy --
they are not mandated by law to do so. Individuals who do not renew
their license plate stickers within 30 days after expiration are
assessed an additional $20 fee. Happy Independence Day!
With the Fourth of July festivities, take a moment to reflect on
the men and women who were the driving force behind our nation.
The United States of America was formed by men and women with a
burning desire for liberty, freedom and democracy. It was their
desire for independence that first brought the early settlers to
this country. Their dream to create a society free of flaws and
inequities led to this great nation we enjoy today.
Happy 229th birthday, America!
