Parks host sunrise services

[MARCH 24, 2005]  SPRINGFIELD -- As many Illinois residents observe the traditional Christian holiday of Easter, some Illinois state parks will be the location of special religious services.

"Just as in the case of weddings and family reunions, our sites are available for groups that plan special religious services," said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Joel Brunsvold. "Many find a spiritual connection in nature as they visit state parks."

For groups of 25 or more, advance registration is required in the site office of Illinois state parks. This helps avoid crowding and scheduling conflicts. At least one responsible adult must accompany each group of 15 minors.

Some state parks hosting services:

  • Cave in Rock will host its 77th annual Easter sunrise service on Sunday at 6 a.m. at the second shelter on the riverside picnic area. All denominations are invited to attend and participate in the service. The annual Easter egg hunt will be at 1:30 p.m. in the picnic area adjacent to the cave parking lot.

  • Lake Murphysboro will have two sunrise services on Sunday. One is at the Big Oak camping area, where the First Baptist Church is the host and provides coffee and hot chocolate after the service. The United Methodist Church conducts a service at the Little Shelter area.

  • At Argyle Lake State Park there will be a sunrise service on Sunday at the park's outdoor chapel. The same church has conducted services there for more than 40 years.

  • At Red Hills State Park, north of Route 50, a sunrise service will begin at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sunrise on Sunday is at approximately 5:50 a.m. in Illinois.
