NORMAL -- The 2005-2006 speech season
began this weekend for the Lincoln Community High School speech
team, and the team brought home a fourth-place finish overall from a
tournament at Illinois State University. The novice team finished
third overall. Novice champions included Kaylyn Englehardt in prose
and declamation and Kelly Lohrenz in dramatic interpretation.

Other finalists for the novice team were Chelsea Filbeck, second in
extemporaneous, and Lincoln Moore, third in original comedy. Varsity
finalists were Annie Sheley, third in declamation and fifth in
humorous duet with Tony Curcuru; Ruth Ohmart, fifth in verse and
seventh in prose; Amy Schumacher, sixth in declamation; Janel
Filbeck, sixth in oratory; and Cameron Kurtz, sixth in
extemporaneous. "This year's team will see success; however, we
lost 11 seniors last year and we have some work to do," said Ed
Jodlowski, a coach of the LCHS team. "This tournament wasn't the
largest, but it did have good competition from many suburban Chicago
schools, so our inexperience and lack of preparation impacted these
results -- yet we were ecstatic for our novice winners. We look
forward to great results next week, when we travel to Normal West."
