J. Michael Abbott

[NOV. 3, 2006]  J. Michael Abbott, 58, died suddenly November 2, 2006. Abbott was principal partner of the certified public accounting firm, J. M. Abbott & Associates and the personal financial planning/asset management firm, Pacesetter Financial Services.

Mike Abbott was born October 24, 1948 in Lincoln, the son of James W. and Katherine Harrison Abbott. He was a 1966 graduate of Lincoln Community High School and graduated in accounting from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1970. He completed the requirements for Certified Public Accountant in 1976 and was certified a Personal Financial Consultant in 1996.

Abbott worked for Arizona-Colorado Land & Cattle Company in Phoenix, Arizona from 1970-1975. He then returned to his hometown of Lincoln to join his uncle, Emory Gaffney, as a staff accountant with Gaffney & Schmidt. In the early 1980’s, Abbott purchased the firm and moved the business to its current location in the renovated Century Building.

Mike is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bobbi, their two sons, Andrew, 25, and James, 23, both of Carbondale, Illinois, and his two sisters, Beth (Dave) Eckert and Kathy (Bill) Daunais and their families, one aunt, Dort (Emory) Gaffney, and one uncle, Jack (Dorothy) Harrison. He was very close to many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Abbott was involved in many local civic and professional organizations. He had a keen interest in helping build, promote and preserve his local community. His hobbies were playing golf, enjoying the company of his friends and family members, and walking his dog, Snoopy.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Sunday, November 5 in one of his favorite locations, the Lincoln Elks Club. Visitation hours are 2:00 – 5:00 PM with a memorial service beginning at 5:00 PM. Donations may be made to the Elks Crippled Children’s Trust or the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation.
