[SEPT. 21, 2006]  BLOOMINGTON -- Illinois Elementary School Association athletes in baseball, basketball and volleyball will rewrite the record books in 2006-07. That is because a new classification system will be used this school year for the first time.

The all-time records in these sports are compiled from all tournaments and games ever played in the respective sport. The records continue to evolve.

Here is how the other records in the four sports will be addressed:

Baseball, boys -- The single-class, Class A and Class AA records have been retired. Class 1A, Class 2A and Class 3A records will be established beginning with the state tournament Sept. 29-30.

From 1955 to 1989 there was one class of baseball. Beginning in 1990 and based upon a school's seventh- and eighth-grade enrollments, baseball was split into two classes, Class A and Class AA. In 2006-07, the three-class system began.

Basketball, girls -- The single-class, seventh-grade, eighth-grade, Class 7A and 7AA, and Class 8A and 8AA records have been retired. Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 4A records will be established beginning with the seventh-grade tournaments Dec. 2 and 7 and the eighth grade tournaments Dec. 9 and 14.

From 1979 to 1985 there was one class of basketball for girls. Beginning in 1986, there were two classes: one for seventh grade and one for eighth grade. Starting in 1990, school enrollment became a factor, and the classification was split into 7A, 7AA, 8A and 8AA.

Basketball, boys -- The Class A, Class B, Class C, Heavyweight A and AA, 7A and 7AA, and 8A and 8AA records have been retired. Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 4A records will be established beginning with the seventh-grade tournaments Feb. 3 and 8 and the eighth-grade tournaments Feb. 10 and 15.

From 1930 to 1972, there were two classes of basketball for boys: Class A, heavyweight; and Class B, lightweight. An additional class was added in 1973: Class C, seventh grade. The heavyweight and lightweight classes were based on age, height and weight. Beginning in 1977 and continuing through 1984, the heavyweight class was divided into two classes, A and AA, based upon enrollment. Beginning in 1985, school enrollment became a factor, and the classification was split into 7A, 7AA, 8A and 8AA.

Volleyball, girls -- The single-class, Class A, Class AA, 7A, 7AA, 8A and 8AA records have been retired. Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 4A records will be established beginning with the seventh grade tournaments March 10 and 13 and the eighth grade tournaments March 17 and 20.

From 1976 to 1984 there was one class of volleyball, which in 1985 was split equally into Class A and Class AA, based upon school enrollment. Beginning in 1989, volleyball was split into 7A, 7AA, 8A and 8AA, based upon enrollment.
