"It's the end of an era as we remove the last of the old pit privies
that have served our visitors for many years," said Jerry Pagac,
executive director of the forest preserve district. "It seemed like
a waste to just scrap them." He would much prefer to see them put
to a new use. "When I suggested to my staff that we market the old
outhouses, there were a lot of snickers and quite a few jokes,"
continued Pagac. "They probably think I'm crazy, but I'm betting
people will be interested in fixing them up for a variety of
possible new uses. How about a quaint garden shed or a place to
change clothes next to the pool... or maybe even a very tall
doghouse!
"Of course someone may want to just bring back a historic feature
of the past to the old farm," Pagac suggests. "Just cut a half-moon
in the door and you're in business!"
