The Detroit Tigers also got an exceptional effort in an important game
-- from a 21-year-old pitcher making his second big league start.
Anderson drove in a team-record 10 runs, hitting a grand slam and a three-run homer Tuesday night in the Angels' 18-9 rout of visiting New York.
The three-time All-Star also had a two-run double and an RBI double, becoming the 12th player in major league history to have 10 RBIs in a game. He was the first to reach double digits since Yankees star Alex Rodriguez also had 10 against the Angels on April 26, 2005.
"It was an incredible night for Garret," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said.
The same was true for Tigers rookie Jair Jurrjens, who allowed only one hit in a 2-1 victory over the Indians at Comerica Park.
The right-hander outpitched Fausto Carmona and carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning until Jhonny Peralta homered with one out for Cleveland's lone hit of the game.
Jurrjens (1-1) walked four and struck out one over 6 2-3 innings in the opener of a key three-game series between the top two teams in the AL Central.
"I'm going to remember this for the rest of my life," he said.
Carmona (14-8) retired his first 12 batters before Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen homered to start the fifth, helping Detroit pull within a half-game of the division-leading Indians.
In other AL games, it was: Boston 8, Tampa Bay 6; Seattle 7, Minnesota 2; Baltimore 6, Texas 2; Oakland 6, Toronto 4; and Chicago 5, Kansas City 2.
For the first time in franchise history, the Indians' lone hit was a home run. The last time they had only one hit was April 15 in a 2-1 win over the White Sox.
Hard-throwing reliever Joel Zumaya, who had been out since May 1 with a ruptured tendon in his right middle finger, retired his only batter for Detroit. Fernando Rodney pitched a hitless eighth and Todd Jones worked a perfect ninth for his 32nd save.
Carmona, who beat Jurrjens in his big league debut last Wednesday, gave up three hits in eight innings while striking out five and walking none.
"What gets lost in this game is Carmona was fantastic," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "The guys were remarking that his stuff was tremendous."
At Anaheim, Calif., Anderson got the first curtain call he can remember, going to the top step of the Angels' dugout and doffing his helmet to a roaring crowd after his sixth-inning grand slam gave him 10 RBIs.
"It's nice when the fans appreciate you," the 34-year-old slugger said. "I think it's the first one I've had, and it was kind of a shock."
The major league record of 12 RBIs is shared by the St. Louis Cardinals' Jim Bottomley (1924) and Mark Whiten (1993). The AL record of 11 was set by Tony Lazzeri of the Yankees on May 24, 1936.

Anderson had a chance to break the major league mark when he came up in the eighth inning with runners at the corners and two outs, but he grounded out to shortstop.
Rodriguez hit a pair of solo shots, giving him 42 homers this season.
Kelvim Escobar (14-6) allowed five runs in six innings for the first-place Angels, who improved to 6-2 against New York this season and stayed two games ahead of Seattle in the AL West.
The Yankees were rolling along for more than a month and closing fast in the playoff chase before visiting the Angels, a longtime nemesis. New York, which has lost the first two in a three-game series, fell six games behind first-place Boston in the AL East and 2 1/2 back of Seattle in the wild-card race.
Los Angeles jumped out to a 7-1 lead against Mike Mussina (8-9), who lasted only 1 2-3 innings for his shortest outing this season.
"It was just bad from the start, and I don't know why because I felt good warming up," Mussina said. "That goes in the top five worst games of my career right there. It was just awful. If I could explain it, I would know how to fix it. And right now I don't."Red Sox 8, Devil Rays 6
At St. Petersburg, Fla., Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo hit two-run doubles during a five-run fourth to back Jon Lester (2-0). David Ortiz had a rare triple and Jonathan Papelbon got four outs for his 30th save in 32 opportunities.
Mariners 7, Twins 2
At Minneapolis, Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson hit consecutive homers, Jarrod Washburn (9-10) earned his first win in seven starts and Seattle won its fifth straight.
Orioles 6, Rangers 2
At Baltimore, Erik Bedard (13-4) struck out 11 over seven innings to win his ninth straight decision, and the Orioles got homers from Miguel Tejada and Aubrey Huff.
Athletics 6, Blue Jays 4
At Toronto, Dan Haren (14-4) matched his career high in wins and Oakland overcame Frank Thomas' two homers plus Vernon Wells' two-run shot. Huston Street earned his 12th save.
White Sox 5, Royals 2
At Chicago, Jim Thome hit his 493rd homer and Javier Vazquez (11-6) won his third straight decision, leading the White Sox out of the AL Central cellar. Danny Richar and Paul Konerko also homered for Chicago, and Bobby Jenks got his 35th save.
