The accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. as the 20
team members, two coaches and a manager were traveling to the David
S. Palmer Arena in Danville, Ill, for a scheduled 5 p.m. game
against Holy Cross College of South Bend, Ind.
The injured were being treated Saturday night at
Home Hospital in Lafayette, said Purdue spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg.
None of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening, she said.
Head coach Cameron Estes of Danville, Ill., said
three vehicles left Purdue about 3:30 p.m. for the game at Palmer
Arena, where the team also practices. Those in the vehicle behind
the one that crashed did not see the accident but came upon it a few
minutes later, finding the van had rolled and was on its side about
10 feet from the highway.
Tippecanoe County Deputy Coroner J. Steve Kohne
identified the dead student as Andrew I. Jackson, 18, a freshman in
engineering from Chanhassen, Minn.
Jackson played hockey "since he was a kid," said
Estes, who was at the hospital with the injured players Saturday
night. "He and his folks lived and breathed hockey. He was excited
to be a student at Purdue."
