A foot or more of snow was forecast for parts of New England. Icy weather was also expected from southern New England into the northern Mid-Atlantic, followed by heavy rain later in the day. The Southeast was also expected to see some light rain.
Heavy lake-effect snow was forecast for the eastern shores of the Great Lakes as cold air behind the cold front moves over the relatively warm lakes.
The Ohio Valley was in for a significant drop in temperatures after balmy highs on Sunday. Light snow and possibly freezing rain were forecast for the region Monday.
A powerful Pacific storm was expected to bring hurricane-force winds and 40-foot surf to Oregon's coast.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of minus 17 degrees at Jordan, Mont., to a high of 91 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
