[December 17, 2007]  DECATUR -- Decatur resident Tanya Lee has been elected president of the Illinois Jaycees for the 2008 calendar year. Lee was chosen as the 77th president of the state group during its November quarterly meeting in St. Louis.

"I am proud to serve as the president of the Illinois Jaycees," said Lee. "The focus of the Jaycees is to make a difference in the community. I intend to help this organization grow in Illinois and inspire the new members to make a difference in the towns and villages where they live. I have seen the difference that the Jaycees have made in Illinois and would like to see new chapters develop and have the same positive effect in other communities throughout the state."

The Jaycees provide individuals between the age of 18 and 40 the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills while serving their community. The organization has over 100 chapters and over 3,000 members in Illinois. Illinois has the second-largest number of Jaycees in the United States.

Members of the 2008 board of the Illinois Jaycees live throughout Illinois. Lee's internal vice presidents are Mary Beth Oliver, administrative vice president, of Springfield, and Kathy Crick, program development vice president, of Frankfort. Lee has three area vice presidents on her board: Maureen Butler, Area One vice president, of Woodstock; Scott Ulrich, Area Two vice president, of Peoria; and Scott Rayho, Area Three vice president, of New Baden.

Lee is currently serving as the 2007 president of the Decatur Jaycees. She began 2006 as the chaplain for the Illinois Jaycees and later in the year was named membership vice president. She served as management vice president in 2005 and as administrative vice president for the Illinois Jaycees for the 2004 calendar year. In 2003, she was the administrative national convention state chairman for Illinois and in 2000 the administrative events state chairman. She was a district director for the Southeast Region during 1996 and 1997 and for the Fox Valley Region during 1997 and 1998. In 2003, she served the Fox Valley Region again as the administrative program director. She joined the Jaycees in 1993.

During her 14 years as a member, she has been active in both the Decatur Jaycees and the St. Charles Jaycees. She served St. Charles as chapter president in 2001. She has also served as a chapter secretary, state director, individual development vice president, membership vice president, management vice president and community development vice president, as well as administrative vice president on the local chapter level.

As a result of her success on the local and state level, Lee has been presented with a Presidential Award of Honor several times and has received numerous awards individually as well as for projects she has run for her chapters. In 2000, she was recognized as an Outstanding State Chairman in the administrative area for the state. At the national convention in Tulsa, Okla., in March of 2004, she was awarded the National Presidential Award of Honor for her dedication to the Illinois Jaycees. During 2004, she was recognized as the Outstanding State Vice President for the Illinois Jaycees.

She has always been active in the Jaycees. Her parents joined the organization when she was 3 years old, and she joined as a member herself on her 21st birthday.

Lee is employed by Corporate Travel Management Group of Lombard as a senior domestic and international corporate travel consultant. She and her son, Aidan, lived in the Fox Valley area for eight years and then moved back to Decatur two years ago to be near her family.

Every year, the Decatur chapter of the Jaycees conducts numerous programs to serve the community and accumulate funds for operation of the chapter and community donations. Some of their signature projects are their Christmas parade, haunted house, Relay for Life and canned food drives, along with many other projects that benefit the community and help raise funds. The Decatur Jaycees meet on the third Sunday of the month, starting at 3:30 p.m., at 940 W. Main in Decatur.
