[June 18, 2007]  (AP) Typical summertime temperatures were in store across most of the nation early Monday, while scattered showers were to erupt over the East Coast and the Rockies.

Hit-or-miss thunderstorms were forecast to pop up in the afternoon from Florida through Massachusetts, with some storms expected to be quite intense. Heat and humidity was to spread throughout the Gulf Coast and Southeast.

Storms also were forecast to crash over the Rockies and western Plains throughout the day as a weak low-pressure system slips out of the mountains. The strongest storms were to be in the northern Plains.

In the West, temperatures were to remain close to normal for most of the region, with clear skies spreading from the southern part of California through central Oregon.

Patchy clouds and fog also were likely throughout much of the Northwest as onshore winds push cold air off the Pacific Ocean.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 11 degrees at Bodie, Calif., to a high of 112 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
