Below are the results of the first round of
match play as well as the starter's list for
Thursday. Scores are also available at
www.iwga.org.
Players in the championship and first flights will play two
matches on Thursday. Quarterfinal matches began at 8 a.m. and
semifinal matches will follow. The five other flights began
semifinal matches at 9:04 a.m. Winners of Thursday's matches will
tee up for the final round on Friday morning.
The IWGA State Amateur Tournament Banquet on Tuesday night at
Hickory Point Golf Course featured many awards and special
recognitions. Annually, on behalf of its members, Illinois Women's
Golf Association contributes $1,500 to a charitable organization in
the tournament's host city. Jack Kenny, president of the Decatur
Park District board and a member of the Decatur State Am local
committee, announced that the IWGA grant would be presented to First
Tee and LPGA's Girls' Golf programs for the purpose of promoting
leadership and golf among youth. In its history, the IWGA has
contributed over $900,000 through funds raised in its Victory
Tournaments.
Also at the dinner, IWGA President Ellen Boeye announced several
opening day award winners. Suel-Ki Park of Champaign was medalist,
and Brittany Boon earned junior medalist honors. Ann Harshman of
Decatur was the recipient of the Young at Heart award. University of
Illinois teammates Suel-Ki Park and Casey Burden won the low net
team trophy. Boeye also awarded junior golfer Elizabeth Fernandes of
Champaign the IWGA's Julia Dodds Scholarship.
Teri Hammel, director of sports for the Decatur Area Convention
and Visitors Bureau, and Rick Anderson, director of golf at Scovill
Golf Club, are the local co-chairs for the tournament. Lynne Frary
of Rockford serves as IWGA chair and Diane Corcoran of Springfield
as co-chair of the 74th Women's State Amateur Championship.

About IWGA
Founded in 1933, the IWGA is an all-volunteer organization
devoted to advancing golf opportunities for the women and girls of
Illinois by conducting state championship tournaments and through
fundraising to support charitable contributions to individual and
organizations that embody the spirit of amateur golf.
In addition to running three state championship tournaments each
year, IWGA, through its charitable giving, awards grants to women's
golf teams at all seven public universities in Illinois as well as
the Evans Scholars Fund. IWGA continues to aid its original charity
-- golf programs at veterans hospitals -- and contributes to other
significant charities throughout the state. IWGA supports breast
cancer research nationally and statewide through the Susan G. Komen
Fund and the Mills Breast Cancer Institute in Urbana, respectively.
IWGA awards the Julia Dodds Scholarship to an outstanding junior
golfer and leader.
Funding for these and other charitable contributions comes
primarily from clubs and associations that sponsor an annual Victory
Tournament. Grants totaled more than $23,000 in 2006.
Names of IWGA board members, past tournament results and entry
forms for all tournaments are available at
www.iwga.org.
