Statement from Gov. Blagojevich on U.S. House vote on SCHIP veto          Send a link to a friend

[October 19, 2007]  CHICAGO -- The following statement from Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich was issued Thursday regarding the U.S. House of Representatives' failure to override President Bush's veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program:

"Today, members of Congress missed an important opportunity to make sure children have access to the health care they need, when it failed to override President Bush's veto of the SCHIP bill. In Illinois, we became the first state to make sure that all kids have access to health care their parents can afford. And while we've taken the lead at the state level to implement a program that meets the needs of Illinois' families, the federal government has an obligation to these same families. The SCHIP bill would have helped meet this obligation by providing substantial new dollars to states to expand health care coverage to more low-income children.

"A majority of Illinois' House members voted to override the president's veto of the SCHIP bill, and I thank them wholeheartedly for deciding to put children first. In Illinois alone, SCHIP has helped to provide health care for more than 316,000 children. Despite today's vote, I will continue to urge the president and Congress to put children first and support SCHIP."
