As a result, the East Coast is expected to dry out, with lingering showers possible over northern New England. On the other hand, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue in parts of the deep South, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
A low pressure system is expected to remain off the Texas coast, brining heavy rainfall to the western Gulf Coast.
Cooler air is expected to filter in behind the cold front, dropping temperatures into the 50s and 60s across the interior of the Northeast, Ohio Valley, and Great Lakes regions. Temperatures in parts of the upper Mississippi Valley region could fall to near freezing.
Light precipitation is expected in the northern Plains, mainly northern Montana and North Dakota, as a low pressure system pushes through the region.
Scattered afternoon thunderstorms, including hail, are possible from New Mexico through the western Texas panhandle.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Wisdom, Mont., to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
