Rotten meat spill closes Ky. interstate       Send a link to a friend

[September 27, 2007]  SOUTHGATE, Ky. (AP) -- A truck carrying rotten meat crashed and spread its pungent cargo across an interstate highway Wednesday, closing part of the road for much of the day.

"It was pretty atrocious," said Southgate police spokesman Sam Hodge.

A driver cut off a car on Interstate 471, causing it to swerve into the path of the truck, Hodge said. The car and truck collided, and both crashed into the median barrier.

The truck, operated by Griffin Industries, tipped over and spilled rotten hot dogs, hamburger and lunch meat across the road. Neither driver was injured, but a southbound stretch of the highway was closed for about six hours after the 9:30 accident.

A police dispatcher reached after business hours said no one was available to comment on whether anyone was ticketed.

Griffin Industries collects and recycles meat byproducts and other materials for use in such products as fuel and fertilizer, according to its online site.

Most of the mess was cleaned up, Hodge said, but drivers will be able to identify the site by smell for a while.

"It's still there," he said of the aroma. "It should linger."
