A system stretching from the Northeast through the Southeast was expected to envelop the entire eastern third of the country with rain as the day progresses, with the heaviest precipitation in western New York.
A tropical low was expected to move away from Florida, merging with a second system to its north to create showers and thunderstorms along the North Carolina coast.
In the West, a system off of the Pacific was expected to bring rain to Oregon and the Intermountain West.
High temperatures in the Southeast were expected to rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Northeast could see highs in the 70s and 80s.
Highs in the Southern Plains were expected to reach the 80 and 90s, and the Southwest was expected to see highs in the 100s in some areas. The Northwest was expected to rise into the 80s.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Doylesville, Colo., to a high of 99 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
