Wilbert Bode

[March 31, 2008]  McLEAN -- Wilbert C. Bode, 88, of McLean, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at 9:15 a.m. at Manor Care Nursing Home in Normal.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta.

A Mass of Christian celebration will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Atlanta, with Father Thomas Taylor officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in McLean Cemetery.

Mr. Bode farmed in Mount Hope Township.

He was a World War II veteran.

Wilbert Charles Bode was born July 25, 1919, to Peter Thomas and Clara Iffrig Bode. He married Carole Graham on Dec. 27, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years; one son, Rick (and Carol) Bode of McLean; one daughter, Janet (and Richard Sr.) Fryman of Long Point; one brother, Everett Bode of McLean, grandchildren Dawn Fryman, Richard (and Jodie) Fryman Jr., Amber Fryman, Matthew (and Tammy) Bode and Mark Bode; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Bode.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Bode.

He was a member of American Legion Post 573 in McLean.

He joined the U.S. Army on April 21, 1941, at Camp Grant and served in the Americal Division 132 Infantry Company A. He saw duty in the Solomon Islands, Okinawa and New Guinea in the South Pacific. He was wounded at the Battle of Mount Austin on Gaudalcanal in the Solomon Islands. He was honorably discharged Sept. 25, 1945.

He was a 1937 graduate of McLean High School.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 573 or the donor's choice.
