[April 02, 2008]  PEKIN (AP) -- A judge in central Illinois has sentenced a woman to more than three decades in prison for killing her young autistic daughter.

Karen McCarron was sentenced Tuesday to 36 years after being convicted in January of first-degree murder. She had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The 39-year-old former doctor suffocated her 3-year-old daughter, Katie, in 2006.

She told police in a videotaped confession that she could no longer deal with her daughter's illness.

She had testified she felt responsible for Katie's autism because she allowed the child to get vaccinated. Some people believe autism is caused by a preservative once used in vaccines.

She had faced as many as 100 years in prison. Prosecutors sought 45 years.
