Putting Life Into Old Cemeteries

Cemetery Preservation Workshop Scheduled for May 17 in Morris

[April 12, 2008]  SPRINGFIELD -- Preserving cemeteries will be the focus of a hands-on workshop, Cemetery Monument Care, scheduled for May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Grundy County community of Morris.

The workshop begins at the Morris Area Public Library, 604 Liberty St., with instructional presentations concerning documenting and assessing grave marker conditions, monument cleaning techniques, and the importance of grave surrounds. The final hour will feature hands-on monument cleaning and other demonstrations at Evergreen Cemetery.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. The registration fee is $20 per person, which includes lunch, and the workshop is open to 40 participants.
