[April 25, 2008]  (AP)  Severe storms were likely in the nation's heartland Friday as a cold front progresses from the central Plains in the morning to the Mississippi Valley by midafternoon.

Hail, tornadoes and damaging winds were possible, particularly over eastern Texas and Louisiana. Strong storms in the Midwest were also possible.

Scattered precipitation and clouds were expected in the central Appalachians.

In the West, cold temperatures were forecast for the Rockies, with snow in the higher elevations of Montana and Wyoming.

West of the Rockies, California was to be warm and clear, while clouds and rain were expected in the coastal Northwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 14 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 99 degrees at Wink, Texas.
