All Three Contested Logan County Races Come In Close

Send a link to a friend

[February 06, 2008]  In spite of inclement weather on Tuesday, voter turnout was higher than normal for a Logan County primary, with 7,351 voters flocking to the polls. Numbers had been tabulated and the lights turned out at the Logan County Courthouse by about 9 p.m.

With the entire bank of Logan County candidates running on Republican tickets, the nine county positions are pretty much a given in November's general election.

Each of the three contested county positions was too close to call until all the precincts were in.

The largest spread of nearly 13 percent difference was in the state's attorney's race, where challenger Michael McIntosh's 2,806 votes topped incumbent Tim Huyett's 2,165 votes.

In the contest for county board member in District 2, Jan Schumacher won 503-451 over current board member Dick Logan.

A three-way race for county board member in District 4 seat saw former board member David Hepler win with 310 votes (43.3 percent) over a close second by Nathan Turner with 288 votes (40.22 percent) and George Mitchell with 118 votes (16.48 percent).

Also up for grabs was the 18th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood, who is entering retirement. Aaron Schock swept the Logan County vote with 3,934 votes (78.89 percent). Contenders Jim McConoughey had 558 votes and John Morris 495 in Logan County.

Uncontested positions

  • Clerk of the circuit court
    Carla Bender -- 4,435 votes

  • Logan County coroner
    Robert E. Thomas -- 4,272 votes

  • County board District 1
    Bill Martin -- 705 votes

    Rick Aylesworth -- 719 votes

  • County board District 5
    Patrick L. O'Neill -- 674 votes

  • County board District 6
    Terry Carlton -- 738 votes

Each of the six districts in the county has two board members. Each board member serves a four-year term. Terms are staggered to expire alternately in each district at two-year intervals so that there is continuity.

Terms run four years, coinciding with the county's fiscal year, beginning on Dec. 1, 2008, and expiring Nov. 31, 2012.
