High temperatures were not expected to break zero across portions of northern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. Single-digit temperatures were forecast for Iowa and Illinois.
Snow showers could develop throughout the Great Lakes region, while rain and snow were possible in New York and Pennsylvania. Widespread snow was not likely in the East, though cloud cover was expected to move back into the region. Temperatures were expected to rise ahead of the clouds before plummeting Saturday.
The West was also expected to warm on Friday. Showers were likely to linger in Southern California and into the Southwest, but most areas were expected to see sunny skies.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of minus 20 degrees at Flag Island, Minn., to a high of 86 degrees at Laredo, Calif.
