ATLANTA -- Delmar D. Houghton, 98,
formerly of Atlanta, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at 8:55 p.m. at
Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He had resided with his
daughter in Springfield for the past seven years. |
His funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at
Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta, with the
Rev. John Horner officiating. Visitation will be
from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mountjoy Cemetery, rural Atlanta.
Mr. Houghton was a well-known farmer in Missouri
and central Illinois, where he operated the family
farm at Atlanta from 1947 until his retirement in
1997. He also spent 20 years with the USDA
Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service
in Lincoln, where he worked with the crop compliance
program and later as a bin site supervisor for a
10-county area.
He was born Dec. 10, 1909, in rural Atlanta to
John B. and Parrie Hieronymus Houghton. He married
Opal Marie McMurry on Dec. 10, 1937, in Warrensburg,
Mo. She preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 2002.
He is survived by his daughter, Darlene Fulk of
Springfield; two sons, John Houghton (and Kristina)
of St. Louis, Mo., and Daryl Houghton (and Ann) of
Millsboro, Del.; three grandchildren, Lori Houghton
Wright (and John) of Alexandria, Va., Robert
Houghton (and Kim) of Genoa, Ohio, and Kelly
Houghton Rogers (and Neil) of Frankford, Del.; three
great-grandchildren, Jacob Rogers, Kiona Wright and
Mia Rogers; and a sister-in-law, Bernadine Houghton
of Columbus, Ohio. |
He was also preceded in death by three brothers,
Paul, Edgar and Eldon Houghton.
Memorials may be made to the Liberty Baptist
Church of Minier or the Atlanta Public Library and
will be accepted at the funeral home.
