[June 06, 2008]  (AP)  More strong thunderstorms were forecast across the nation's heartland Friday as a low pressure system continues its trek across the Plains. Forecasters said the greatest threat for severe weather was in Illinois.

Storms were expected to linger in the mid-Mississippi Valley into the evening and overnight, when severe weather was possible.

Temperatures in the Northeast were forecast to rise as a warm front associated with the storm in the Plains moves from the mid-Atlantic into New England. The region was expected to experience a heat wave over the weekend, with highs in the Northeast approaching triple digits.

After a chilly week in the West, temperatures were forecast to rise but barely return to normal levels. More cool weather and cloud cover were expected in the northern Rockies and Northwest, though skies over the Southwest were predicted to clear. Morning fog along the Pacific Coast was expected to burn off by the afternoon.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 105 degrees at Fort Stockton, Texas.
