[May 22, 2008]  CHICAGO (AP) -- The hugely successful Chicago production of the Broadway hit "Wicked" is closing in January 2009, after three and a half years of performances.

The show's producers say that when the musical closes, it will have played exactly 1,500 performances and grossed more than $200 million at the box office.

It's already the top-grossing and longest-running Broadway musical in Chicago history.

The dedicated Chicago production took up residence at The Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre, in June 2005.

"Wicked" bills itself as the "untold story of the witches of Oz." The Broadway production won three Tony Awards and has been running at New York's Gershwin Theatre since October 2003.
