[September 17, 2008] (AP) Active weather was expected for portions of the East Coast and West Coast on Wednesday, while a cold front lingered across the northern Midwest.

In the East, showers and thunderstorms were expected in the Carolinas, as well as portions of Georgia and Florida.

In the West, thunderstorm activity was forecast for areas of northeastern California, portions of the Central Great Basin and northern Arizona. The strongest storms were expected to occur in Nevada and were to produce frequent lightning with possible hail. A lack of moisture over the Central Great Basin was to prevent the threat of flash flooding.

Areas in the Central Great Basin, California and the Pacific Northwest were expected to see red flag warnings as weather conditions were to be conducive for fire development and growth in these regions.

Meanwhile, a cold front was expected to dip across the northern Midwest on Wednesday. The front was expected to move toward the Northeast by late Wednesday evening.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 109 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
