[February 02, 2009]  Recently, for the first time, the Lincoln Youth Wrestling team sent two wrestlers representing Lincoln to the IKWF Jon Davis Open in Peoria, which features 2,000 youth wrestlers from several states. Max Koning and Austin Swarts made the trip, and both picked up victories and medals. Koning finished fifth in his bracket and Swarts placed fourth in his.

Further youth wrestling action last week saw the team compete at Mount Zion. In the 6-and-under age group, Zach Malerich and Kaison Reagan each finished fourth. In the 7-8-year-old division, Bryce Watkins placed eighth, Jordan Malerich placed fourth and Trevor Bree finished third. The 9-10-year-old division had Max Koning pick up Lincoln's best finish with a second-place medal. In the same division, Jarrett Poole, Jacob White and Austin Swarts all picked up victories and third-place finishes, and Jonathan Riddle placed fourth. Conner Routson competed in the 11-12-year-old division and placed eighth.

On Saturday the youth team traveled to Prairie Central, where Max Koning grabbed another championship trophy in the 9-10-year-old division. Zach Malerich and Kaison Reagan both grabbed victories and third-place medals in the 6-and-under division. Jordan Malerich got a win and a third-place finish in the 7-8-year-old division. Conner Routson competed in the 11-12-year-old division and placed fourth.
