[March 05, 2009]  CHICAGO (AP) -- A jury has convicted a 22-year-old Chicago man for gunning down a 10-year-old girl as she celebrated her birthday in 2006.

Cook County state's attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton says Moses Phillips was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the death of Siretha (sir-EE'-tha) White.

Prosecutors say Phillips was driving a car and targeting men sitting on a porch when he shot the girl in the head as she tried to take cover.

Defense attorneys say Phillips isn't the shooter.

Simonton says Phillips faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Sentencing is set for April 3.
