[September 02, 2009]  (AP)  Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected over the Southeast again Wednesday, while a low pressure system continued to move off the Rockies and into the Plains.

RestaurantA stationary front was forecast to linger over the Gulf states and stretch from the Mid-Atlantic into the southern Plains. Fed by ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, wet weather would pop up anywhere along the front. Storms were not expected to turn severe, and rainfall totals were to remain less than a half of an inch in most places.

Elsewhere in the East, high pressure was forecast to remain as the dominant weather source and bring mostly sunny skies, mild weather and cooler temperatures with near freezing overnight lows. These conditions were to stretch over the Mississippi River Valley, the Great Lakes region and into the Northeast. Highs were expected to reach into the 70s over most of the eastern U.S.

In the high Plains, a low pressure system was expected to create a warm front that would extend over the northern and central Plains, allowing for a return in southerly flow, thus warmer temperatures with higher humidity pushing in from the south. Scattered shower and thunderstorm development was expected anywhere along the front, with rainfall totals remaining less than half an inch.

In the West, high pressure would allow for dry and warm conditions over the West Coast. However, in the north, a system off the coast of the Pacific Northwest was forecast to push moisture onshore, which would bring overcast skies that may squeeze out light rain.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Embarrass, Minn., to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
