[September 29, 2009]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast to persist in the Northeast while diminishing across the Southeast as a front pushed off the East Coast on Tuesday.

RestaurantA strong low pressure system would continue to track over the Great Lakes and into the Northeast. This would create a cold front that would extend down the East Coast and was expected to push offshore and away from the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states, but would linger over the extreme Northeast as well as central and southern Florida. Forecasters said to expect rainfall totals over the coastal regions of New England around a tenth to a quarter of an inch, while Maine and Florida may see scattered showers and thunderstorms with up to a half-inch to an inch of rain. The region would continue to see highs in the lower to mid-60s, and the Southeast was expected to remain in the 70s.

Meanwhile, high pressure would build over the central U.S. and push over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. This would allow for cool and dry air to pour in from Canada. Thus, the upper Mississippi Valley and Midwest and were expected to see highs in the upper 50s, with overnight lows dipping to near freezing temperatures. Frost and freeze advisories have been issued over the northern Plains again for Tuesday night. The system over the Great Lakes would create a strong eastward flow over the region, which would trigger lake-effect rain over the western shores of the Great Lakes.

Farther west, a low pressure system spinning off the coast of British Colombia would approach the Pacific Northwest and push a cold front over the region. This front would kick up scattered showers and strong winds up to 25 mph. This system would also push a trough over the Rockies that would bring scattered showers of mixed precipitation to the central Rockies and Great Basin. Snow levels would remain high near 10,000 feet with 1 to 3 inches and strong winds up to 30 mph.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 15 degrees at Polebridge, Mont., to a high of 109 degrees at Bullhead City, Ariz.
