[April 20, 2010]  (AP)  High pressure was forecast to continue building in the Northeast on Friday bringing continued clear skies and dry conditions to the region.

HardwareThe dry weather was would be helpful for New England where residents will begin to dry out from this week's record-breaking flooding. Many rivers throughout the region were expected to drop below flood stage, though some of the hardest hit locations would remain underwater through the day. In addition to the sunny skies, temperatures throughout the East were forecast to rise above normal for this time of year as southerly winds carry air northward.

To the West, the Plains would see warm pleasant weather in the morning hours, but an approaching storm system was expected to bring clouds rain and cooler temperatures throughout the day. As the storm approached the Mississippi Valley, warm moist air would surge northward out of the Gulf of Mexico triggering severe thunderstorms with large hail, strong winds and possible tornadoes.

In the West, a strong storm would push into the Northwest bringing more rain to the coast from Washington and Oregon south into central California. This storm was forecast to be warmer than the one that moved through earlier in the week, so snow wasn't expected to be a problem at low elevations, but the Cascades and Sierra Nevada ranges would see abundant snowfall.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Eureka, Nev., to a high of 93 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
