[April 26, 2010]  (AP)  Active weather was anticipated over much of the U.S. on Monday.

In the East, a low pressure system was forecast to start pushing eastward and off the East Coast. However, the system would linger over the Northeast and New England, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. These storms have a history of producing severe weather; thus, large hail, strong winds, heavy downpours and even tornado development were likely. Rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half of an inch were expected, with up to an inch in areas of thunderstorm development. The system would linger over the Great Lakes; thus, the Ohio River Valley was expected to see a few scattered showers.

Meanwhile, behind this system, a small low pressure system would continue tracking through the northern Plains and into the Midwest. Flow around this system would pull cool air in from Canada, creating a cold front that would stretch southward into the southern Plains. Light rain was expected to develop along this front, with a chance of thunderstorms in the South, but severe weather was not likely.

To the west, a ridge of high pressure would build in from the West Coast and over the Rockies. This would allow for mild weather over the Western half of the country. However, in the Pacific Northwest, another low pressure system spinning in the Pacific Ocean would push a cold front onshore and trigger overcast skies, which would produce scattered showers by evening. Increasingly cloudy skies were expected over California throughout the day.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 94 degrees at Brownsville, Texas.
