McLEAN -- Billie Mert Israel, 87, of
McLean, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, at 12:15 p.m. at the Hopedale
Nursing Home, Hopedale.
A graveside service for family and friends will be at 2 p.m. Monday
at Oak View Cemetery in Armington, with Ed Loyd officiating. |

Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home, Atlanta, is in charge
of arrangements. Mr. Israel was a farmer.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was born March 2, 1923, in Armington. His
parents were George and Pauline Hickey Israel. He
married Dorothy Burton on Sept. 16, 1946, in
Stanford.
He is survived by his wife; his children, Bill of
McLean, Joy M. (and Peter) deVries of Delmar, N.Y.,
and Todd (and Tammy) of Armington; one sister, Marge
Jacobs of LaSalle; and four grandchildren, Jacob
Israel, Tanner Israel, Nick deVries and Mary deVries.
A sister, Ina Lou (husband Charles) Walker,
preceded him in death.
Billie graduated from Hittle High School in
Armington in 1941. He signed to pitch for the Class
A Chattanooga, Tenn., ballclub affiliated with the
Washington Senators but volunteered for the U.S.
Army instead of waiting to be drafted. He served
with the 9th Army Air Force Headquarters military
police during World War II and pitched in several
exhibition games in London, including an all-star
game at Wembley Stadium against major and minor
league ballplayers in the Army. After his military
service he pitched for the Troy, Ala., Trojans of
the Alabama State League and Carrollton of the
Alabama-Georgia League until 1947 when he returned
to Armington to farm. |
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the
Armington or McLean rescue squads or the charity of
the donor’s choice.
