[August 26, 2010]  (AP)  Drier and warmer weather was forecast to return to the Northeast on Thursday as the low pressure system affecting the region lifted northward.

As this system exited, a frontal boundary would move through the region, bringing chances of showers to northern New England. Generally fair conditions with partly cloudy skies and temperatures near normal were expected elsewhere in the region.

To the south, unsettled weather would persist from areas of the Carolinas through Florida and along the Gulf Coast as rich moisture hung over the Southeast and a stationary front lingered along the Gulf Coast. Waves of energy along the front would aid in fueling more scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly in Florida and Georgia.

Elsewhere in the South, an area of low pressure in the western Gulf of Mexico would slowly trek westward with showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall was expected to increase along the Texas coast as the low approached the western Gulf Coast.

In the West, a significant change would begin to affect the West Coast states as an unseasonably cold low pressure system dropped from the Gulf of Alaska. Strong cooling would accompany this low and persist through the weekend as the system deepened along the coast. An associated cold front would also bring chances of showers to the Pacific Northwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 122 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
