[December 13, 2010]  (AP)  The eastern U.S. was forecast to kick off the workweek with more snow Monday as the strong weekend winter storm of the Great Lakes lifted northeastward into southeastern Canada.

Soaking rains were expected in northern New England, primarily Maine, before spreading into the Canadian Maritimes. Heavy rainfall would create chances of minor flooding of streams and some rivers.

Meanwhile, cold air wrapping around the system was expected to spread across the warm Great Lakes and kick up lake-effect snow showers, intense lake-effect snow squalls and freezing spray from much of Michigan and northern Indiana through northwestern Pennsylvania and New York.

Lake-effect snow warnings were expected to remain over Chautauqua and western Cattaraugus counties in New York through the midweek. The most persistent snow bands of this area could dump up to 12 to 18 through Tuesday night. Strong winds and more snowfall over these areas may lead to flight delays, downed tree limbs and power outages.

Behind this system, a very cold air mass was forecast to continue spreading across the East on Monday. Temperatures in the Tennessee Valley were expected to drop to about 25 degrees below average, while areas of the Southeast reach near record lows by Tuesday morning.

In the West, lingering moisture from a dissipated system would provide more precipitation in the Pacific Northwest, areas of northern California and northern Idaho on Monday. Most of the day's precipitation was expected to fall in the form of rain through much of the day. Snow levels were forecast to drop later in the day as the mild air mass over the region began to subside.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of minus 25 degrees at Crane Lake, Minn., to a high of 87 degrees at Camarillo, Calif.
