All-day snow on Christmas Eve expected to slow travel

[December 23, 2010]  The National Weather Service in Lincoln issued a special weather statement early Thursday morning and a hazardous weather outlook. Accumulating snowfall is expected for Christmas Eve.

InsuranceThe following forecast was released at 2:46 a.m. Thursday for the counties of Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, McLean, Schuyler, Mason, Logan, DeWitt, Cass, Menard, Scott, Morgan, Sangamon, Christian, Macon, including the cities of Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington, Normal, Havana, Lincoln, Jacksonville, Springfield, Taylorville and Decatur:

An upper-level weather disturbance will move southeast through Illinois on Christmas Eve, bringing accumulating snows to central Illinois. The snow should begin by daybreak and persist through much of the day, eventually tapering off during the nighttime hours. Snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches appear likely by the time the snow ends.

While the snowfall totals are not expected to be especially heavy, the fact that they will be occurring on one of the busiest travel days of the year may result in additional travel hazards and delays. Continue to monitor the latest weather forecasts, using your favorite media outlet, and leave sufficient time to reach your holiday destination.

The following hazardous weather outlook was released at 5:36 a.m. Thursday for the central Illinois counties of Cass, Christian, De Witt, Fulton, Knox, Logan, Macon, Marshall, Mason, McLean, Menard, Morgan, Peoria, Sangamon, Schuyler, Scott, Stark, Tazewell and Woodford:

Day 1: Thursday and Thursday night

Patchy dense fog is possible through midmorning. Any dense fog has the potential to produce scattered slick spots on untreated surfaces.

Light snow may develop late tonight ahead of an approaching storm system, but the bulk of the snow will hold off until Friday.

Days two through seven: Friday through Wednesday
