[December 27, 2010]  (AP)  Significant wintry precipitation was expected in New England on Monday as a dangerous winter storm in the western Atlantic was forecast to pass just southeast of Nantucket on Monday morning. Bands of heavy snow and strong winds of 20 to 30 mph with frequent gusts to 45 mph were expected to persist along the coast of this region through the morning, continuing blizzard conditions with blowing and drifting snow.

InsuranceSnow totals along the New England coast will likely range from 8 to 16 inches during the next couple of days. The Boston area and metropolitan New York areas may experience the worst of this storm, with snow totals ranging from 1 to 2 feet of snow and winds gusting to 60 mph. Dangerous travel conditions with reduced visibility and power outages were expected to continue. Residents were encouraged to monitor their local weather activity and take proper precautions against the upcoming dangerous weather event.

Meanwhile, light to moderate bands of snow with areas of much lighter snow accumulations were expected from the Northeast through the Tennessee Valley, much of the Southeast, and the Appalachians. While the winter storm and precipitation was forecast to pull away and lift northward over Nova Scotia Monday night, strong winds will remain in the forecast through Tuesday.

Elsewhere, in the West, a strong system was expected to move into the Pacific Northwest late Monday through at least Tuesday, bringing significant snowfall to the Cascades, strong winds to the coast, breezy conditions inland, and rising snow levels to the foothills and coastal mountains. Meanwhile, calmer and drier weather was expected in the central U.S.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of minus 13 degrees at Big Piney, Wyo., to a high of 78 degrees at Opa Locka, Fla.
