Bettie Spitze

[February 01, 2010]  LINCOLN -- Bettie Mae Spitze, 79, of Lincoln, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at the VNA Horton Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Ind.

Following cremation at Angelcrest Crematory in Valparaiso, there will be a private family service at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

Mrs. Spitze had worked in a variety of positions for the state of Illinois and was a self-employed housekeeper for 22 years.

She was born March 3, 1930, in Evansville, Ind., to John and Gladys Reeder Copeland. Bettie married Elmer Spitze on May 26, 1974, in Lincoln, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 2007.

She is survived by one son, Duane (and Brenda) Dexter of Lincoln; one daughter, Glenda

Dexter- (and Philip) Brown of Chesterton, Ind.; one stepson, Charles (and Roberta) Spitze of Weare, N.H.; one stepdaughter, Jeanette (and Amiya) Das of Champaign; a brother-in- law, Robert Spitze of Urbana; a sister-in-law, Dora Grace (and Nolan) McCall of Berryville, Ark.; five grandchildren, Shelley Dexter- (and Jon) Thomas of LeRoy, Andrew Dexter of Lincoln, Matthew Brown of Chesterton, Ind., Derek Dexter of Lincoln and Christopher Brown of Chesterton, Ind.; and two stepgrandchildren, Philip (and Kerry) Spitze of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Michael Spitze (and Emily DeMaria and daughter Aizlin) of Keene, N.H..

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Melvada Jean Copeland; one son, Ben Dexter; and an infant grandson, Matthew Dexter.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln.

Bettie enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting and fishing.

Memorials may be made to VNA Hospice in Valparaiso, Ind., or Logan County Paramedic Association in Lincoln.
